실레는
자신의 여동생 게르티와는 각별하였고 에로틱한 분위기를
풍기기까지 하는데 그의 누이동생 게르티는 오빠를 위해
정기적으로 누드 모델이 되어주었다. 후일 동생 게르티를
빈 미술공방에서 일할 수 있도록 다리를 놓은 것도 그였다.
빈 미술공방에 열광하던 젊고 매력있는 게르티는 공방 최고의
모델이 되었다.

'나는
결혼하기로 마음먹었습니다. … 그렇지만 놀랍게도 상대는
발리가 아니지요.' 발리는 원래 화가 클림트의 모델이었는데,
1911년 쉴레를 만나 그의 모델이 되었다. 그리고 둘은 쉴레가
결혼할 때까지 함께 살았다. 발리는 쉴레에게 헌신적이었다고
한다. 집안 일은 물론이고, 쉴레의 선정적인 누드 드로잉을
고객에게 전달하는 심부름도 했는데, 그런 심부름을 할
때면 고객들의 성적 희롱에 눈물을 흘리기도 했다고 한다.
그러나 발리는 순진한 여자는 아니었다. 그녀는 쉴레의
그림에 에로틱한 환상을 불러일으키는 원천이었다. <빨간
블라우스를 입고 등을 대고 누운 발리>에서 그녀는 순진한
듯 하면서도 요염한 눈빛과 자세로 상대방을 유혹하고 있다.
그녀는 자신의 성적인 욕망을 어떻게 표현하는지를 아는
여자였다.
쉴레는
마지막으로 발리를 만나 편지를 건네 준다. 편지 내용은
매년 여름 에디트 없이 함께 휴가를 보내자는 것이었다.
그러나 발리는 그것은 불가능하다고 거절하고 떠난다. 그리고
그 후로 그들은 다시 만나지 않았다.

하름스. 철도청 간부였던 아버지를 둔 에디트는 전형적인
중산층 집안에서 세상 물정 모르고 곱게 자란 여자였다.
아무래도 쉴레는 그녀의 순진함에 반한 것 같다.

구아슈(gouasche)
- 고무를 수채화 그림물감에 섞어 그림으로써 투명한 수채물감과는
다른 불투명한 효과를 내는 기법. 수채화에서는 그림물감의
작은 입자가 종이의 섬유질 속으로 스며들어가지만, 구아슈에서는
물감이 종이 표면에 그대로 남기 때문에 잇닿은 물감의
층을 이룬다. 구아슈는 직접 반사되는 광채가 특징이며
특유의 산뜻함과 밝음. 자유로운 붓놀림에서 나오는 자연스러움이
있다. 털이 거친 붓으로 그리면 약간만 칠해도 효과적인
임파스토(그림물감을 두텁게 칠하는 화법)가 가능하며,
담비붓을 사용하면 물감이 부드럽고 완전하게 칠해진다.
구아슈로 그리는 기법은 아주 오랜 역사를 가지고 있다.
고대이집트인들도 이 기법을 사용했고 프랑수아 부셰(1703-70)
같은 로코코 시대의 화가들에게도 인기가 있었다. 오늘날의
화가들은 수채화 물감 등을 함께 쓰기도 한다.
